When I first read the term ‘Female Factory’ I had visions of a factory that churned out females…in a version of The Stepford Wives. Although I have lived in Australia most of my life, I had never come across this term before. My husband who had visited Tasmania many times before explained to me that it is what they locally called a Convict Penitentiary for Women. This one is in Hobart although there is really not much left of it except the boundary walls and, if I remember correctly, one cottage where the warden lived.

Female Factory, there are two I know of – Sydney and Parramatta, Land Cockies used to go to them to get wives.

So maybe it’s just QLD that didn’t use that term or it was just lost to history

Interesting. And they put most of their fenestration into one bay window. Fascinating. Thank you.
